Homelessness Support
Meeting the immediate needs of neighbors experiencing homelessness — food, clothing, and a path toward stability.
Hickory, North Carolina · Faith-based community outreach
Hardship doesn’t always arrive as wind and water. It comes as homelessness, addiction, hunger, and loss. For years, we’ve helped our neighbors weather every kind of storm — and we’re still here.
“Together, we can rebuild lives and restore hope — determined to make the world better than we found it.”
Our Mission & Vision
Long before Helping Beyond the Storm had a name, our founder Crystal Hutson was already doing the work — feeding the hungry, lifting up neighbors experiencing homelessness, and walking alongside those fighting addiction toward recovery.
Helping Beyond the Storm grew out of that calling — a way to formalize and expand years of grassroots compassion into something the whole community can rally behind. We believe the people closest to a crisis are often the ones best able to meet it, with dignity, speed, and heart.
Today we serve as a community and donation hub, partnering with local shelters and organizations to reach neighbors across Hickory, Catawba County, and the wider region — through hard times of every kind.
What We Do
Our work meets people where they are — with food, shelter, recovery support, and the everyday essentials that restore dignity and hope.
Meeting the immediate needs of neighbors experiencing homelessness — food, clothing, and a path toward stability.
Walking alongside individuals on the road to recovery, offering support, encouragement, and practical help.
Supporting women’s shelters and men’s transitional homes with supplies, furnishings, and care.
Helping put hot, nourishing meals on the table for anyone in our community who is hungry.
Rushing essential supplies to families in the hardest-hit areas when disaster strikes the region.
Rescuing pets and donating food and supplies, because no member of the family gets left behind.
A Place to Rest
It’s a simple thing most people take for granted: a bed to sleep in. Through our roots in the furniture world, we’re able to do something few others can — get real mattresses to the people who need them.
We’ve donated mattresses to local shelters and to families in disaster areas who had nothing left to sleep on. A good night’s rest is where a fresh start begins.
Our Most Notable Chapter
In September 2024, Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. We loaded up and went straight to the areas that were hit the hardest.
We’ll never forget the children — kids who lost everything they had. There is no greater honor than helping a family who has lost it all begin to rebuild, and giving someone a place to call home again.

It’s the night someone has nowhere to sleep. The fight to stay sober. The day a family loses everything. Wherever the storm comes from, we believe no one should face it alone.
Meet Our Founder
Crystal Hutson is the heart and soul of Helping Beyond the Storm. For years — long before the nonprofit existed — she has poured herself into serving Hickory’s most vulnerable: feeding the hungry, supporting those without homes, and standing with neighbors fighting addiction.
Crystal also owns In Your Home Furnishings, which supported this work in its earliest days — before any donations or funding came in — helping get supplies, mattresses, and aid to families from day one. Her vision is simple: a community where everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive.
